Is Online School For Everyone?

While I was in high school, I made plans and eagerly prepared myself for college.  I studied for and took the necessary standardized tests.  I applied to my top choice universities, and I researched for countless hours the programs and fields of study I would be interested in.  Unfortunately in the second semester of my senior year in high school all of my plans were instantly changed.  I was in a car accident and was seriously injured.  If only there was something like adt in a car that could protect you from befoulments.  Fortunately my grades and participation in school meant that I could still graduate, but the bad news was that all of my medical bills needed to be paid.  The only way my parents could make this happen was to use my college fund until things were settled with the insurance companies.  This was sad news to be, but there was a settlement that meant I could go to college when ready.

I just never really felt ready though.  The wreck really took a toll on me emotionally and I could not bring myself to get up and go to school everyday.  After about six months of doing nothing my parents approached me about the idea of taking a few classes online just to get me back into the swing of things.  I signed up to start in an online program at a university, and from the first time I logged into my class I loved it.  I found though that online school is not for everyone.

When you decide to go to school you need to make sure it is the best for you.  Online school is not easier than traditional college, and it might even be more difficult for some than others.  Here are things that you need to consider if you want to pursue an education with online coursework:

  • You will have to stay pretty organized and on top of things.  If organization is not your forte, then maybe online school is not the best decision for you.  Take a lot of time to think about all that you will have to keep up with and manage.
  • If you need one on one or face to face time with an instructor regularly, then you might not do so well online.  Sure, you can communicate with your instructor and classmates, but it is generally through email and forum posts, not face-to-face.
  • And lastly if you are not motivated enough to stay on a routine schedule and complete your work, you might want to reconsider online school.
