Online education is catching the eye of many people and colleges all over the US. While it seems to be a great solution to further public education, there are also several problems with Online Education.
One of the leading problems with online education is the lack of communication between teacher and student. This has been a reported problems from both ends of the spectrum. Teachers report that they don’t have any feed back so it’s hard to know what to assign and how long to give them. On the other hand students report that it is sometimes difficult to grasp a new topic without direct instruction. These problems are sometimes resolved with email or a chat board between the teacher and student or contact between students. Another problem with online classes is the possibility for students to cheat. It’s common knowledge that teachers frequently reuse test material, to make planning their course schedule easier. This presents the problem of students posting and selling tests online. This presents a problem for both the teacher because he or she will have to create new tests. It is also a problem for the students because if they don’t learn the material they wont be able complete the next level in their education. It is also a possibility for the enrolled student to get someone else to complete their work. When working in a classroom it’s easier to identify a students work through hand writing an other factors, but when everything is online it makes it more challenging.
One of the more recent problems with online education is inappropriate communication among students, as well as teachers. In certain classes group projects can be assigned so students must learn to work together online. For some this presents a problem when fellow students don’t pull their weight. When dealing with grades many students are very vocal about their opinions to other students and even the teachers. When students make rude or inappropriate statements about other students and teachers there is no way to quite them. Retaliation would only cause the problem to spread into a larger matter. It’s being found more and more common for disputes to be published online.
While there are many types of online classes and a number of them that operate smoothly without having any problems, although that is not the case for every online class. Universities and teachers are working together to reduce the possibility for online students to cheat their way through their education.
